NEW FINE ART PROJECT - Power of the Mind - Image #1

For most of my life I based my worldview on science alone, but over the past few years I have developed an appreciation of spirituality too (quantum physics helped me merge these two viewpoints). In an effort to share what I’ve been discovering with the world, I have created a fine art project called Power of the Mind. Each image in this project will focus on a scientific experiment that stretches a commonly held perception about the power of our beliefs. By looking at one of these images alone it might be challenging to see a spiritual connection, but hopefully over the course of showcasing many experiments I'll be able to provide insight into my understanding of the underpinnings of our reality.

This first image is about a 2007 Harvard University experiment called Mind-set Matters: Exercise and the Placebo Effect. The experiment consisted of telling hotel maids (in the non-control group) that the work they do everyday fulfills the Surgeon General’s requirement for a healthy lifestyle. They were told, for instance, that vacuuming for 15 minutes burns 50 calories, cleaning the bathrooms for 15 minutes burns 60 calories, etc. Each maid was put through a bevy of health tests and lifestyle surveys at the start of the observation, and then again four weeks later. As a result of their new mental constructs alone, the informed maids had statistically significant improvements in weight, waist-to-hip ratio, blood pressure, body fat and body mass index.

I believe that what we focus our minds on is made material in real world experiences, though it can be our nature to perceive such manifestations as coincidence. To me, this experiment helps to shed a bit of light on the true metaphysical nature of our minds. The maids were able to change the physical makeup of their bodies - not by any lifestyle changes, but by new mental constructs and the Power of the Mind.

Thanks to Crystal Reike, who recently won 1st place at Nationals and thus earned the coveted International Federation of Body Building pro card, for modeling for this project.

WWJD at the Democratic National Convention?

Ever since I grew my hair long I've had people (both friends and random strangers) claim I look like Jesus.  Combined with the fact I was reading many spiritual texts, this got me to thinking it would be a fun challenge to play the role of Jesus in a fine art project.  Suddenly the phrase "What Would Jesus Do" seemed a lot harder to answer. Peter and I are currently hard at work aswering that question in another project due out later in 2013.  In the meantime we stretched our imaginations with a practice project: Jesus Visits the Democratic National Convention.  I spent the DNC week photographing all the events and then later we Photoshopped me into several of the scenes.  I was inspired to showcase a playful (cartwheels in the streets) and down-to-earth side to Jesus - we hope you enjoy!

Find Your Center - The FYC Campaign Continues!

This image of Charlotte's uptown (really a panorama composite of 5 images plus fireworks, etc) will be made into a billboard-sized wallscape to adorn the side of the Charlotte Chamber building at 3rd & Tryon Streets uptown.  It will replace our wallscape from an earlier FYC campaign that has been in that spot for the last few years.

A Day at the Beach

Peter and I just finished this photo for the Dublin Dog Foundation. Jason Watson and his team are raising $30,000 to supply a service dog for a boy named Clarke. Learn more and donate at http://dublindogfoundation.org/ Dublin Dog Foundation

DJ Jay Faire

This is DJ Jay Faire, who we really enjoyed meeting and getting to know. He’s certainly had an adventuresome life - doing a world tour with Das EFX among other things. For his new song, Get In Da Club, he wanted a high energy feel and fell in love with our image of the guitarist crowd-surfing for Earthspun Fabrics. We produced a similar image for him, which he loves. A big shout to Jay, who is deejaying at the NFL’s Pro Bowl in Hawaii this week!

New Skyline Image for a Good Cause

We just donated this very unique skyline image of Charlotte to three great causes: Sustain Charlotte, The Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte and one of our favorite clients, Charlotte Center City Partners. Sustain Charlotte is a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring, informing, and advancing sustainability across the Charlotte region. An amazing community activist who is also my friend, Shannon Binns, is the creator and director of the organization.  This image will be featured on the cover of a new informative brochure (printed on chlorine-free, 100% post-consumer recycled fiber that is also certified by Green Seal and by SmartWood for FSC Standards, of course!) coming out in a few weeks.  Learn more here:http://www.sustaincharlotte.org.

The Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte, which provides families a safe, comfortable “home away from home” while receiving medical treatment at local hospitals, is being rebuilt and is scheduled to open in March of 2011.  This skyline image will be featured art in the new home.  Learn more here: http://www.rmhofcharlotte.org.

Capturing BIG Images

The post from http://www.workbook.com/blog/1106 …. I was in Texas shooting for a couple days at the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium. As a football fan and a fantasy football player (who happened to go 15-0 in my fantasy league last year!), I was well aware of all the excitement people felt over the new $1.3 billion stadium. After spending two days inside I could see why, the place is architecturally beautiful and, even while empty, is totally intense. The LCDs, the scoreboard, the dome, it’s something I wanted to try to capture in a unique way. Peter Godshall, our CGI artist/retoucher, and I are always trying to push the envelope to expand our capabilities. We used the opportunity to create a 3D spherical panoramic HDR image from the 50 yard line. It took over 100 photos to create the file. This project allows us to pull individual panoramas, as seen in this image, or it can be used for 3D purposes. For instance, if an agency wanted to show a vehicle at the 50 yard line we would have all the information necessary to take their CG vehicle and make every reflection and shadow look precisely right for that environment. It’s so much fun to constantly challenge ourselves and it always astounds me how quickly new capabilities will find their way into a project just around the corner.
