Moment Mile Exhibition Starts Today!!

In fall 2014, The Light Factory Contemporary Museum of Photography and Film invited photographers—new and seasoned—to participate in Moment Mile. Created and led by Sean Busher, the project sought to build awareness of and support for the museum's recent re-opening. On 1 November, 138 photographers gathered in Uptown Charlotte. At 6:15 p.m., the photographers stood in predetermined spots on the mile-long stretch of Tryon Street and simultaneously clicked their shutters. Then, exactly five minutes later at 6:20 p.m., they did so once again on the opposite side of the street. Stitched together, the two resulting prints – each 100 feet long and 11 inches tall –capture a single moment of a stretch of Charlotte’s urban core and acts as a historical marker of the city circa 2014.

“Participatory projects like Moment Mile are a new avenue that involve the Charlotte community in what we are doing at The Light Factory, and more broadly involve others in the art of film and photography,” said Busher, who is a board member for The Light Factory and a Charlotte advertising photographer.

Moment Mile will be on view from December 17, 2014 through February 22, 2015. The Moment Mile project was generously supported by the Arts & Science Council, The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and Wells Fargo.

New Low Poly CGI Project

This project allowed Peter Godshall, our team's digital imager, to take a break from our usual photo-realistic CGI creations to instead produce this low poly landscape. Even with the low poly export you can see the guy's shadow on the mountain wall and the beautiful reflections in the waterfall - so cool!

Low poly CGI is very eye-catching for advertising.

Sean's Moment Mile Project on Front Page Again!!

Sean created a project called Moment Mile to bring attention to the reopening of The Light Factory, a photography and film museum in Charlotte, and an institution he has served on the board of for four years. The project Sean created involved orchestrating 138 photographers to line up every 36-feet along Tryon Street in uptown Charlotte and snap a photo at the same instant. It worked! We were able to create the world's longest panorama (we checked with Guinness), and look forward to sharing the final exhibition with the world soon. Best of all, The Light Factory (and Sean) made the front page (and above the fold too!) of the Charlotte Observer twice in one week! Check out the article from the online edition below. Basically, they wanted to see a life filled with wonder, amazement, learning and excitement. The images were released during a TEDx-style event all about the arts. The Arts & Science Council is using social media to build momentum for the September 23rd event called Imagine 2025: Share the Vision, a day-long event about the arts in Charlotte and a release of the 2025 Vision Plan for the ASC. Our team was commissioned to make three dynamite images to represent the future of arts in Charlotte, NC and we look forward to their release/exhibition at this event. These puzzle piece CGI images were created to send out in various social media posts to build excitement and intrigue. City Block Project - Winner Announcement

Every year Sean throws a community-based photo contest on behalf of The Light Factory called City Block Project. Each year a new block is chosen and for 24-hours photographers shoot the block in every way imaginable - the people, the action, the architecture and more. This year's block was BB&T Ballpark, the new home of the Charlotte Knights, the AAA baseball team now in uptown Charlotte, NC. The event had 35 photographers submit 135 entries. The winners are chosen by the participants - for each one submission a person makes they get two votes and can vote for anyone but themselves. Below are the photos from the winners, some shots from the unveiling party and the announcement at BB&T Ballpark.

Photographing the Police

I have run-ins with cops and security guards while photographing all the time. Often I'm told I'm not allowed to be doing what I'm doing, even though I have every right in my favor. Because I am usually unafraid of confrontation, I challenge these people. I have yet to lose (except for those times when I'm on private property and am simply playing dumb). While shooting one of Bank of America's buildings I had a cop try to lie to me to get me to go away (he was being paid off-duty to guard the front of the Bank of America corporate headquarters while in uniform), but when I pointed out all the right in my favor he responded, "Yeah, you're probably right, I don't work uptown much and don't really know the rules." Urgh! Anyway, because of all of the police v. people protesting happening in Ferguson lately Wired did an article about police arresting journalists for doing their constitutionally-protected jobs.
